Supervision Philosophy & Style
My supervision style would best be defined as relational, as a wide swath of current available research suggests that the supervisory relationship—replete with trust, understanding, and expertise—serves as the foundation for supervisees’ professional growth and increased competency. My style of relational supervision also incorporates a non-hierarchical paradigm, where I am not the expert in the room, but a curious participant who remains open to exploring all of the many dynamics happening within the therapeutic space.
Every intention will be made to create an atmosphere of trust, so that supervisees feel comfortable discussing authentic concerns, in addition to celebrating achievements. Serving as our supervision framework and congruent with the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board’s guidelines, I will strive to ensure that supervisees remain compliant with ethical standards of social work practice; increase their competence in social work practice; engage in professional growth and development; increase abilities to formulate a treatment plan appropriate to clients’ needs; & implement and evaluate the efficacy of interventions consistent with treatment plans. I, in turn, will assess supervisee’s capacities and skills; ensure correct and accurate diagnosis; and remain transparent regarding any areas of supervisee concerns and areas for further growth and development.
By using the supervisory relationship as our guide, in addition to engaging in supervisory expectations, goal setting and implementation, and continuing education, it is my hope that supervisees will experience a reduction of anxiety, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome, while also experiencing an increase in therapeutic identity development, competency, and professionalism.
